PGC Cows
Our goal is to create a functional mother cow.
We start with the basics- easy fleshing, easy calving, with good feet and udders.
Our cows are not extreme in frame, and all replacements are i50K tested as heifers.
We score all of our mother cows at calving for Temperament, Foot Angle & Foot Curl, and Teat & Udder conformation.
We put top priority on calving ease and expect our cows to calve unassisted. We breed for a vigorous calf, between 70 and 90 pounds, that gets up and suckles unassisted and can survive the winter elements of North Central, MT within hours of birth.
We require all of our cows to have udders that calves can nurse without help.
We don't tolerate any disposition issues.
We want our cows to be good to people and love their calves.
Here in North Central Montana, Mother Nature requires a lot of durability out of our herd. Our mother cows have to survive (and excel) in the sometimes extreme, subzero winters and then in springtime, breed back - oftentimes before we see a lot of green grass.
All of our cows get a chance at A.I. breeding first cycle and then we hold them to a 55-60 day breeding window.
After breeding, the cows summer on short grass prairie with a supplemental mineral and salt.
At preg check, we Johnes test all mother cows. This up and coming disease can be very hard to control and we have decided to make the investment in keeping our herd clean, to protect our customers and the herds they have worked so hard to develop.
Calves get weaned around the middle of September, giving us the opportunity to determine ratios and cow production.
The cows dormant graze until December or January, depending on snowfall, utilizing reserved forage and a protein & mineral supplement.
We remove net wrap from all winter feed prior to processing and feeding.
